Botox Q & A

What is Botox Cosmetic?

When you smile, frown, or look inquisitive,  the repeated action of your muscles creates an effect that eventually causes lines and wrinkles to form. Botox is an injectable, prescription medication containing a highly purified toxin. When injected into specific areas, it temporarily blocks nerve signals to the muscles that contract to form tiny lines and wrinkles in your skin. After injections, you’re still able to make facials expressions, but without the forcefulness that causes excessive lines and wrinkles.

Botox can also slow the development of wrinkles by preventing the dramatic muscle movements of the face that cause lines to etch into the skin. Dysport has a similar mechanism of action but contains an alternate form of the toxin, so it spreads out a little further to offer slightly different results. The Atlantic Dermatology team works with your look and goals to determine which injectable is right for you.

Where is Botox effective?

For cosmetic purposes, Botox is FDA-approved to treat horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes. It also has applications for hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

How long does Botox last?

Botox cosmetic results last about up to four months in most people. Schedule regular injections at Atlantic Dermatology to protect your youthful results. The team there can get you on a convenient plan.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Botox is administered using superfine needles, so you do feel pinching during treatment. But, most people tolerate Botox sessions quite well, and the procedure only takes a few minutes. How many injections you receive depends on where you receive treatment and your specific expression profile.

If you’re concerned about the sensation, talk to your Atlantic Dermatology provider about the application of ice or a topical anesthetic to numb the area before the injections.

When will I see the results of Botox?

In most people, it takes 24-72 hours to see the results of Botox. In some people, it may take up to five days to observe changes. Optimal results are evident about ten days post-treatment.

Most Botox sessions have no side effects. You may have slight, temporary redness at the injection sites, or mild swelling or bruising, but these effects wear off quickly.
